Birth Injuries

Birth injuries are most common around the shoulder. Injuries to the nerves around the shoulder (brachial plexus injuries) and clavicle fractures are the most commonly seen problems.

Other types of fractures, such as femur (large bone of the thigh) fractures, can also be seen. Fortunately, most of these injuries will heal with a simple splint or no treatment at all.

Physiotherapist and/or occupational therapist at Collage Pediatric Therapy may be consulted to promote strengthening, positioning and stimulation through play in order to improve a baby’s function.

Collage Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists are licensed professionals and offer free screenings, evaluations and therapy at convenient times, including week-ends and some evenings.

Services are covered by most private insurance plans, and families requiring financial assistance may qualify for funding from certain charitable foundations.

Clients at Collage Pediatric Therapy can benefit, if required, from an on-site multidisciplinary team that includes child psychologists and speech therapists.

The Collage team of licensed professionals emphasizes the importance of early intervention; that is having children assessed and treated earlier rather than later when concerns arise regarding development. Refer to this list of Speech and Language Goals by Age to help understand if a child is meeting communication-related developmental milestones.
